Ramsey Canyon Preserve

Box 84
Hereford, AZ 85615
520-378-2785
  • Ramsey Canyon is a Nature Conservancy preserve and is one of Arizona's best known, and with good reason. With the vast array and diversity of bird species from the Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, Mexican Sierra Madre and the Sonoran Desert converge upon this spot during various times of the year, making it a prime location for those who like to observe birds. You can see the Western and Hepatic Tanagers, Sulpher-bellied Flycatchers, Golden Eagles, Goshawks, Whiskered Screech Owls along with countless other distinctive species.
  • Ramsey Canyon is best known, however, for the large variety of hummingbirds that frequent the canyon between April and September. As many as 13 species of hummingbirds inhabit the preserve during these months, and the canyon has become known as the "Hummingbird Capital of the United States".
  • The Conservancy has set up a hummingbird feeder area, where birders and non-birders alike can sit on benches and watch as these little birds zip from feeder to feeder, making quite a show in their small-feathered finery.
Besides having the reputation of a bird watching mecca, the Canyon is also known for its trails that can make for an excellent day's hike. While scenic no doubt, it is also somewhat steep, but the Hamburg Trail offers a nice overview of Ramsey Canyon. Several shorter and lower trails exist throughout the riparian areas of Ramsey Creek for added relaxation and enjoyment.
  • Access to Ramsey Canyon is limited by the Nature Conservancy to help preserve the canyon environment and maintain the tranquil atmosphere that makes this place so special. With space for 14 cars in the parking lot and no parking permitted elsewhere, RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED (520-378-2785) for weekend and holiday visits, and advisable during the week.
  • Cabins, Cottages and a Bed & Breakfast Hotel offer comfortable overnight accommodations and are positioned adjacent to the preserve. Many of the rooms are adorned with antique furnishings.
  • To make arrangements with the Ramsey Canyon Inn, call 520-378-3010 or write to 31 Ramsey Canyon Rd., Hereford, AZ 85615.
